Hair clipper maintenance: step by step for a longer lifespan
⏰ Short on time? Here's the summary
Good clipper maintenance comes down to three things: brush away hair after every use, oil the blades with two to three drops after every 3 to 4 haircuts (and at least once a month), and store the clipper somewhere dry and dust-free. Don't leave it on the charger for days, never use water on a clipper that isn't waterproof, and replace the blades as soon as they start pulling instead of cutting.

Why maintenance matters
A clipper is in direct contact with your skin and hair, so without maintenance, hair, dirt and skin flakes quickly build up around the blades. That hurts performance: the blades go blunt faster, start pulling or snagging, and the risk of skin irritation goes up. Regular maintenance keeps your clipper sharp, extends its lifespan and gives you longer battery life, because the motor doesn't have to work against unnecessary friction. On Revahs clippers such as the Clipper Two Pro you can easily brush and oil the blades at home, and once they are worn you replace them with two small screws.
What do you need?
- Cleaning brush: included as standard with every Revahs clipper.
- Clipper oil: prevents wear and keeps the clipper running smoothly and efficiently.
- Kitchen roll or a microfibre cloth: to wipe away excess dirt and oil.
- Compressed air (optional): handy for hard-to-reach spots.
Step by step: how to clean your clipper
- Switch off and unplug. Never clean the clipper while it is on the charger.
- Remove loose hair. Brush away loose hair with the included brush, using a little compressed air for stubborn dirt if needed.
- Clean the blades thoroughly. Brush the blades and the space underneath them clean and wipe them with a dry cloth. Don't use water or alcohol on the Clipper models: they are not waterproof, and solvents can damage the clipper.
- Oil the blades. Apply two to three drops of clipper oil to the blades, let the clipper run for ten seconds so the oil spreads, and wipe off the excess. This is one of the most important steps: it keeps the blades sharp and prevents wear.
- Store it dry. Keep the clipper in a clean, dry place, ideally in a pouch or travel case, so moisture and dust don't stand a chance.
How often should you clean your clipper?
- After every use: brush away loose hair.
- After every 3 to 4 haircuts, at least once a month: two to three drops of oil on the blades. Does your clipper have an oil indicator? Then also oil it as soon as the indicator lights up.
- Monthly: a thorough clean, brushing the blades and the space underneath them completely clean.
- Every six months: check the blades and other parts for wear and replace where needed.

Besides the blades, the battery deserves attention too. Don't leave your clipper on the charger for longer than necessary: over time that shortens the battery's lifespan. Use the original charger, charge when the battery is nearly empty rather than running it completely flat every time, and don't use the clipper while it is charging. Store it at room temperature. That way the battery stays strong for longer. Not charging at all any more? Read cordless clipper not charging.
Common mistakes
- Putting off cleaning: hair and dirt build up, performance drops and the blades wear faster.
- Not using oil: dry blades wear faster and start pulling at your hair sooner.
- Water or alcohol on a clipper that can't handle it: always check the manual first, or you risk motor damage or rust.
- Cheap accessories: non-original guide combs or parts can damage the blades.
- Carrying on too long with blunt blades: once the clipper starts pulling or snagging, new blades are often cheaper than a new clipper.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean my clipper?
Brush away loose hair after every use. Oil the blades with two to three drops after every 3 to 4 haircuts and at least once a month, and give it a thorough clean every month.
Can I use any oil to lubricate the blades?
No, always use dedicated clipper oil. Other oils can gum up or damage the blades.
Can I rinse my clipper under the tap?
Only if your clipper is explicitly waterproof. The Revahs Clipper models are not, so use the brush and a dry cloth instead.
What should I do if my clipper feels less sharp?
Clean and oil the blades thoroughly first. If that doesn't help, the blades are probably worn and replacing them is the next step.
How do I make the battery last longer?
Don't leave the clipper on the charger for longer than necessary, use the original charger and store it at room temperature.
