Why your clipper feels less powerful – and how to get it back in top condition (without immediately buying a new one)

Does your clipper feel less powerful than before? Don’t worry: this is usually easy to fix.

A clipper that stutters, pulls on hair, or simply feels less powerful than when purchased can be frustrating. Many users quickly think the device is broken or needs to be replaced. But in most cases, there is no defect. Rather, a lack of maintenance or improper use.

In this blog we explain:

  • Why your clipper may feel less powerful
  • How to solve this problem yourself (without technical knowledge)
  • When it’s time to replace parts or consider an upgrade

And the good news is: you don’t need a new clipper for this. With the right care, your clipper works like new again.

1. Recognize the symptoms of a “weakened” clipper

Does your clipper not feel like it used to? Then you probably recognize this by one or more of the following signs:

  • You have to go over the same patch of skin more often to shave everything neatly
  • The clipper pulls on the hair instead of cutting it smoothly
  • You hear a different, heavier sound during use
  • The battery percentage seems to drop faster
  • The clipper heats up faster

Does this sound familiar? Then it is likely due to wear, dirt, or improper maintenance. Fortunately, this is easy to fix.

2. The 4 most common causes of a less powerful clipper

Cause 1: Buildup of hair and skin oils between the blades

With every trim, microscopic tiny hairs and skin particles get caught between the blades. If you don't remove this regularly, friction occurs and that unnecessarily strains the motor.

Solution:

  • After each trim, use the included cleaning brush to wipe the head clean.
  • Carefully remove the blades (follow the manual for your model) and remove dirt residues.
  • Ideally do this after every 1-2 uses with intensive use.

 Cause 2: Lack of lubrication

A clipper that is not (regularly) oiled runs heavier. The blades then rub against each other without lubrication, which negatively affects the power and lifespan of your device.

Solution:

  • After each cleaning, apply a drop of clipper oil to the cutting blades while the device is running briefly.
  • Oil prevents wear, reduces heat, and ensures the clipper moves smoothly and powerfully again.
  • Use only suitable oil, such as available through our webshop – regular household oil is either too greasy or too thin.

Cause 3: Dull or worn blades

Even the best blades wear out over time, especially with intensive use. This causes more resistance and a less precise result. At Revahs, we use stainless steel blades with a ceramic coating and self-sharpening blades, but these also wear out after prolonged use.

Solution:

  • Check if the blades still feel sharp and cut evenly.
  • Are they damaged, dull, or do you feel resistance? Then replace them with original separate stainless steel blades from our shop.
  • Note: removing the blades yourself should be done carefully and is not covered by the warranty. Always follow the instructions in the manual.

 Cause 4: Poor battery performance

Over time, a lithium-ion battery can lose capacity. An empty or nearly empty battery does not have the power to run the motor at full strength.

Solution:

  • Only charge your clipper when the battery percentage drops below 20%. Avoid continuous charging when the battery is still full.
  • Use the original adapter and cable for the best result.
  • Fully charge the clipper before each use if you notice the power decreasing quickly.
  • With older models or clippers that have been used intensively, you might consider switching to an upgrade model with a stronger motor and longer battery life (see the bottom of this blog).

3. How the LCD screen helps you detect problems

If you have a clipper like the Revahs Clipper One or Clipper Two, you can see at a glance via the LCD screen:

  • The current battery level
  • A possible oil indicator
  • The RPM on the Clipper One and Two (Pro) is a valuable indication of how powerful your device still is.

Watch for changes: if the oil icon appears, it's time for a cleaning and a drop of oil. The oil icon appears for the first few seconds when you turn on the clipper; this is the indicator light.

4. Maintenance = extending the lifespan

With proper maintenance, a clipper can last for years without losing power. Therefore, we recommend taking time for these steps every 3-5 uses:

Maintenance checklist:

Brush the cutting blades clean
If necessary, remove and clean the blades
Apply 1-2 drops of oil
Charge the battery in time (below 20%)
Regularly check the sharpness of the blades

5. Ready for an upgrade? Then the best choice is…

Is your current clipper heavily used, older than 2 years, or does it still show weakness despite good maintenance? Then it might be time for an upgrade.

For example:

🔥 Revahs Clipper One (Pro)

  • Powerful motor with LCD display
  • Adjustable cutting length 0.5 – 3.5 mm
  • Stainless steel blades with ceramic coating
  • Oil indicator, battery in % and speed display

🔥 Revahs Clipper Two (Pro)

  • Ceramic self-sharpening blades
  • 4 attachment combs for different lengths
  • Up to 180 minutes of wireless use
  • Lightweight design with quiet motor

Conclusion: Getting more power from your clipper starts with smart maintenance

A clipper that feels less powerful is rarely “broken”. In 90% of cases, you solve the problem with a little attention: cleaning, lubricating, checking, and timely replacing what is worn out.

Invest a few minutes in maintenance. And save on an expensive replacement.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about a less powerful clipper

How often should I oil my clipper?

We recommend oiling your clipper after every 1 to 2 trimming sessions, especially if you trim regularly. This keeps the blades moving smoothly and prevents overheating and power loss. For intensive use (for example professional or multiple times per week), it is wise to oil after every session.

How do I know when the blades are worn out?

You notice this by:

  • Pulling or scraping sensation during shaving

  • Uneven or irregular shaving results

  • A heavier sound than usual

  • Less power despite a full battery and good lubrication

Are the blades dull or damaged? Then it is time for a set of new stainless steel blades.

What if my clipper still feels weak after cleaning and oiling?

Then check the following points:

  • Is the battery fully charged?

  • Is the battery older than 2 years and does it drain faster?

  • Are the blades possibly dull despite good cleaning?

If the answer to one or more of these questions is “yes,” then it is time to replace the blades – or consider switching to a new or more powerful model such as the Revahs Clipper Two Pro.

Can I clean my clipper with water?

Not all models are suitable for cleaning under the tap. Check the manual of your Revahs clipper. Some models are splash-proof (IPX6) or fully waterproof (IPX7), but this varies per device. When in doubt, always use the supplied cleaning brush and a dry cloth.

Which maintenance products are suitable for my clipper?

We recommend only:

  • Clipper oil specially for precision blades

  • Original stainless steel blades or ceramic blades

  • The cleaning brush that is included as standard

Do not use household oil, aggressive cleaning agents, or cotton swabs – they can cause damage.
